There is really something to be said for making peace with your pain, be it physical or emotional. Meditation has helped me immensely in accepting (not the same as giving in to) and responding to both in a calm, proactive way. My favorite way is telling one or both I accept their presence and that my heart is large enough for them to rest within it alongside me. I’ll “sit” with them, breathe with them, allow them to do what they need to do, and most often their hold over me dissipates. Reactions to events within and without, I’ve learned, are what cause stress and unhappiness or alleviate them.
